Tom, actually cross compiling gems and even fat-binary gems (another post from Aaron) are already in DataMapper.

In relation to bcrypt, perhaps project author can take a look to other projects and how the implement it to get the gem building

See the wiki for links to them:

Wouldn't Luis Lavena's rake-compiler simplify this?
http://github.com/luislavena/rake-compiler/

It's mentioned in RubyInstaller's page, and apparently it standardizes the process of cross-compiling.

Thanks for this very helpful post...
I'm trying to figure out how to get datamapper running on windows -- the dm-types gem attempts to build bcrypt() on windows, and fails.

It would be great to see the datamapper folks follow this recipie to make merb and datamapper install under windows. It's been broken for the past few months.

I'm under a deadline right now, but I will try to deal with it if no one else does, sometime in the next few weeks.

Great to see this documented! Thanks!

Tom
